Seasonal Focus

Feeding your flock with Countrywide Ewe feeds.
Lack of grazing during the summer has left some tups in poor condition coming into the mating season. Feeding up to 0.5kg of Tupping rolls or Mendip Nuts at least three weeks before they go in with the ewes will raise body condition score by 0.5 and ensure that they are fit enough to last the whole mating season, and that the added selenium and Vitamin E intake will produce active vigorous semen which will result in a healthy lamb crop in the spring.

Store lamb buyers are active in the market, keen to purchase lambs that will finish in 6 – 8 weeks, taking advantage of the flush of autumn grass, while market prices for prime lamb carcasses remain attractive. As grass declines, feeding Lamb Finisher Nuts, or Rapid Lamb Pellets for those requiring a non GM feed, will ensure lambs are fit for slaughter at the grades of finish and conformation that the market gives a premium for.

For early lambing flocks make sure that concentrate feeding with Countrywide Ewe feeds is introduced 6 to 8 weeks pre lambing to meet target body condition scores for lambing. The danger of delay is the increased risk of health problems like twin lamb disease and hypocalcaemia both of which have shown an increase in recent years as flockmasters have sought to economise on feed costs by introducing concentrates form 3-4 weeks pre-lambing, just when the nutrient demands of the developing foetuses are at the peak. Scanning ewes and feeding ewes with twins, triplets and singles in separate groups is a more effective way of ensuring the whole ewe flock is fed more effectively.
